A Prescription for Precision: Integrating Genetics into Africa’s Essential Medicines
A new analysis reveals a significant gap in global and national health policy: essential medicines lists, which guide treatment availability in health systems worldwide, largely ignore pharmacogenomics. The study systematically reviewed the World Health Organization’s Model List and the lists from 52 African countries, finding that on average, one in every eight medicines on a country’s list has established, actionable genetic guidance. This oversight is particularly critical for Africa, a continent which harbors more genetic diversity than the rest of the world combined.
