A new study demonstrates that cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) neurofilament light chain (NfL) levels are the strongest predictor of cortical atrophy in the early-onset Alzheimer’s disease (EOAD) signature, outperforming other CSF biomarkers. In 80 EOAD patients, researchers found that CSF NfL levels best predicted atrophy within the EOAD cortical signature, and that combining this biomarker with the atrophy measure explained more variance in cognitive impairment than either factor alone. For a neuroscientist studying central nervous system mechanisms of disease and treatment, this finding provides a clinically accessible biomarker to track neurodegeneration in a particularly aggressive form of Alzheimer’s, directly supporting your goal of using mechanistic understanding to improve patient well-being.
