A new analysis reveals a significant gap in global and national essential medicines lists (EMLs): the omission of pharmacogenomic (PGx) guidance. The World Health Organization’s 2023 EML includes 447 systemic medicines, yet 13% have established, actionable drug-gene interactions that are not accounted for. This oversight is particularly critical for Africa, where genetic diversity is vast and national EMLs contain, on average, one medicine with PGx guidance for every eight listed.
