The Real-World Shield: How Well Pediatric Flu Vaccines Worked

A large, multi-season study from the New Vaccine Surveillance Network provides crucial real-world evidence on influenza vaccine effectiveness (VE) in children. Analyzing data from seven US pediatric medical centers, researchers tracked children aged 6 months to 17 years hospitalized or seen as outpatients for acute respiratory illness across three flu seasons (2021–2024). Among nearly 20,000 children, they found that overall vaccine effectiveness against influenza-associated hospitalizations and outpatient visits ranged from 34% to 60%, with the lowest protection observed in the 2021–2022 season.
