Una novedosa tecnología de electro-reducción con acoplamiento de hidrógeno (ZERO) logra producir hierro de alta pureza con un consumo energético de solo 2,76 MWh por tonelada, muy por debajo de los 5,86 MWh del alto horno tradicional. Los investigadores demostraron que, al sustituir el ánodo de evolución de oxígeno por una reacción de oxidación de hidrógeno (HOR), el voltaje de la celda se reduce en más de un 50% (1,3 V frente a 2,9 V a 100 mA/cm²), manteniendo una pureza del hierro del 94%. Para su investigación sobre sistemas geotérmicos en cuencas mineras, este hallazgo es relevante porque ilustra cómo la integración de hidrógeno renovable puede descarbonizar procesos industriales intensivos en energía, un principio aplicable al diseño de sistemas de calefacción eficientes y con baja huella de carbono.
