La refrigeración elastocalórica basada en películas de aleaciones con memoria de forma, que generalmente depende de actuadores eléctricos, ha sido demostrada por primera vez en un sistema impulsado térmicamente. Los investigadores lograron un diferencial de temperatura de hasta 12.9 K (4.0 K a nivel de dispositivo), validando que el calor residual puede sustituir la electricidad en el accionamiento del ciclo de enfriamiento. Para su investigación en sistemas geotérmicos de agua de mina, este avance podría ofrecer una vía para utilizar el calor residual del agua caliente extraída en tecnologías de climatización de bajo consumo eléctrico, complementando o mejorando la eficiencia de las bombas de calor en sus edificios.
