A new study reveals a critical vulnerability in federated unlearning (FU), a technique designed to comply with data privacy regulations like the “right to be forgotten.” Researchers have developed the Federated Unlearning Inversion Attack (FUIA), which allows a curious central server to reconstruct the very data meant to be erased. By analyzing the subtle changes in a machine learning model’s parameters before and after the unlearning process, the attack infers gradient information to reconstruct features or labels of the forgotten data. This work is the first to systematically expose privacy risks in FU, demonstrating the attack’s effectiveness across sample, client, and class unlearning scenarios on multiple datasets.
