A new fMRI study reveals that childhood neglect fosters depression through two complementary brain network mechanisms: hyperconnectivity within a cognitive control subnetwork involving the default mode and dorsal attention networks, and reduced dynamic flexibility in network reconfiguration. Researchers identified a distinct 207-edge subnetwork that was hyperconnected in depressed patients with a history of neglect, with its connectivity strength independently predicting depressive symptom severity and mediating the neglect-to-depression pathway.
