Una revisión en el *Journal of Neuroscience Research* detalla el papel dual de los proteoglicanos de sulfato de condroitina (CSPGs) en el sistema nervioso central. Durante el desarrollo, estas moléculas de la matriz extracelular son cruciales para la migración neuronal, la guía axonal y la organización sináptica. Sin embargo, en condiciones patológicas, su sobreexpresión crea una barrera que frena la regeneración axonal, la remielinización y la remodelación sináptica, perpetuando la inflamación y el daño.
