A Gel-Based Brain for Better Machines

Researchers have developed a new class of organic neuromorphic devices that significantly enhance synaptic plasticity and memory retention. The key innovation is an “anion-excessive” gel electrolyte, which maintains electrical neutrality within the device even after electrochemical doping. This design reduces the Coulombic force on anions in the active layer, hindering their back diffusion and thereby overcoming a fundamental bottleneck that has limited the performance of previous organic electrochemical transistor-based systems.
