A Carbon-Preserving Pathway to Sustainable Aviation Fuel

A new tandem catalytic process efficiently converts bio-derived high-carbon alcohols into jet-fuel-range alkanes, preserving the valuable carbon chain length. Researchers developed a two-stage system where acidic WOx/AC catalysts first dehydrate C8–C14 alcohols to alkenes, which are then fully hydrogenated over Ni/Al2O3 under mild conditions. This route successfully converted pilot-scale, bio-ethanol-derived heavy alcohols, dramatically lowering oxygen content and yielding hydrocarbons that closely match conventional jet fuel.
