Discovery of the day

A novel machine-learning method was developed to estimate municipal-level healthy life years without activity limitations using medical claims data from Kyoto Prefecture, Japan. Analyzing outpatient claims from 2016, 2019, and 2022 (n ≈ 2.2 million), the model aggregated 5,743 diagnostic codes into 40 disease categories to accurately predict activity-limitation prevalence, revealing notable regional disparities: healthy life years ranged from 67.3 to 75.2 years for males and 71.3 to 77.6 years for females. This scalable, real-world administrative data approach enables timely and detailed regional health monitoring, directly supporting your work in chronic disease prevention by identifying high-risk municipalities and informing targeted, place-based health-promotion policies.
