Discovery of the day

Un estudio publicado en Nature Energy demuestra que el uso de un catalizador de recombinación de gases reduce en un 95% el cruce de hidrógeno en electrolizadores alcalinos de agua líquida, sin afectar el rendimiento del electrolizador. Los investigadores analizaron el comportamiento del cruce de gases y demostraron que esta estrategia mitiga eficazmente los riesgos de seguridad derivados del uso de electrodos avanzados y separadores más delgados. Para su investigación de doctorado sobre la optimización a futuro de un sistema geotérmico de agua de mina en una región post-minería, este hallazgo es relevante porque la producción de hidrógeno renovable mediante electrólisis podría integrarse como vector energético complementario al calor geotérmico, y la mejora en la seguridad operativa aquí reportada facilita la adopción de sistemas de electrólisis de alto rendimiento que podrían acoplarse a su infraestructura geotérmica para almacenar excedentes de energía térmica o eléctrica.
