Researchers identified CD205 as a marker for pre-plasma cells in both mice and humans. They found that the enzyme Kdm6b, which removes repressive epigenetic marks, is essential for this final differentiation step. Intriguingly, these pre-plasma cells ramp up glutamine metabolism to produce α-ketoglutarate, a necessary co-factor for Kdm6b’s activity, directly linking cellular fuel to the epigenetic control of antibody production.
