A New Frontier in Control: Machine Learning Masters Complex Bandit Problems
Researchers have introduced a novel machine learning framework for solving complex optimal control problems known as fluid restless multi-armed bandits (FRMABPs). This approach leverages fundamental properties of FRMABPs to generate a comprehensive training dataset by solving numerous problem instances with varied starting conditions. The method then applies a nonlinear feature transformation and employs Optimal Classification Trees with Hyperplane Splits (OCT-H) to learn a time-dependent state feedback policy. Tested on real-world challenges like machine maintenance, epidemic control, and fisheries management, the learned policies demonstrate high quality. Crucially, once trained, the policy executes decisions up to 26 million times faster than traditional direct numerical algorithms, offering a breakthrough in applying reinforcement learning and decision trees to dynamic resource allocation.
