A new study reveals that the lipid mediator 12-HHT, produced by membrane-damaged epithelial cells, activates the BLT2 receptor to trigger membrane repair and prevent cell death caused by the bacterial toxin pneumolysin. The researchers demonstrated that BLT2 promotes the release of toxin-bound plasma membrane segments as extracellular vesicles in a sphingomyelinase-dependent manner and activates Rac1-driven actin polymerization, both essential for resisting pore-forming toxin-induced damage.
