A new study demonstrates that inhibiting a specific transfer RNA fragment (5’tRF-His-GTG), which is downregulated in human mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (mTLE), exacerbates seizure activity and pathology in a mouse model. The researchers identified widespread changes in tRNA and tRNA-derived fragment (tRF) expression in human hippocampal and cortical tissue from mTLE patients, and showed that knockdown of this tRF in neuronal cells dysregulates epilepsy-associated genes, including Cannabinoid Receptor 1 (CNR1).
