A new analysis of the World Health Organization and 52 African national Essential Medicines Lists (EMLs) reveals a critical gap in public health strategy. The study finds that, on average, one in every eight essential medicines listed has established, actionable pharmacogenomic guidance, yet these drug-gene interactions are not accounted for in current selection processes. This oversight is particularly significant for anti-infective drugs, which represent over a quarter of the medicines with pharmacogenomic biomarkers on these lists.
