A Shot in the Arm: Real-World Vaccine Performance in Children

A large multi-center study provides crucial real-world evidence on pediatric influenza vaccine effectiveness (VE) across three recent seasons (2021–2024). Using data from seven US pediatric medical centers, researchers analyzed outcomes for nearly 20,000 children with acute respiratory illness, estimating VE against both hospitalization and outpatient visits. The study found that overall vaccine effectiveness ranged from 34% to 60% across seasons, with the lowest protection observed in the 2021–2022 period.
