Immune Dysregulation in Mania: A New Window into Systemic Inflammation

A proof-of-concept proteomics study investigates immune dysregulation in bipolar disorder, focusing on the manic phase. Researchers performed high-resolution proteomic profiling on platelets from hospitalized patients with severe mania and matched healthy controls, using liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry. The analysis revealed that mania is associated with a distinct proteomic signature, with proteins primarily enriched in immune activation pathways while lacking those involved in cell homeostasis.
