The Decoy Protein: A Fungus’s Masterstroke in Hijacking Plant Defenses

A study in the Journal of Integrative Plant Biology reveals a sophisticated fungal strategy that directly subverts plant immunity. The pathogen Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici secretes a cerato-platanin effector protein, FolCP1b, which enters the host plant cell. Once inside, FolCP1b acts as a decoy, binding to a key host defense enzyme—the apoplastic subtilase SlSBT1.
