A New Method for More Faithful and Controllable Text Summarization

A novel method for controllable abstractive summarization demonstrates how to leverage arbitrary textual context—from a single keyword to entire document collections—to guide the focus of generated summaries while maintaining high factual faithfulness. The approach uses a sentence BERT model to create contextual embeddings, which then identify the most representative words in the source document. This technique addresses a key weakness in existing controllable summarization and large language models (LLMs), which often generate unreliable or hallucinated content. In zero-shot evaluations, the proposed method outperformed state-of-the-art LLMs and specialized models, producing summaries that are both highly relevant to the specified context and accurate to the source material.

Study Significance: For professionals in natural language processing, this research directly tackles the critical challenge of reliability in text generation, a major barrier to deploying summarization tools in sensitive domains. It provides a practical framework for enhancing model control without sacrificing accuracy, moving beyond simple prompt engineering.
