A new benchmark called MoNaCo challenges the capabilities of large language models (LLMs) in complex, real-world information-seeking tasks. Unlike existing question-answering datasets, MoNaCo features 1,315 natural, time-consuming questions that require dozens to hundreds of intermediate reasoning steps across multiple documents. Researchers developed a decomposed annotation pipeline to create this resource, which tests the ability of automated agents to handle genuine breadth and complexity. When evaluated on this benchmark, frontier LLMs achieved a maximum F1 score of only 61.2%, struggling significantly with low recall and a high rate of hallucinations.
