In a cross-sectional analysis of over 200 adults with chronic knee pain, researchers found that elevated blood pressure was associated with reduced mechanical pain sensitivity but more severe radiographic osteoarthritis in normotensive men. Conversely, normotensive women with higher blood pressure showed increased pain facilitation without a corresponding increase in joint degeneration. The findings suggest that vascular factors, such as blood pressure, may be a key contributor to the often-observed mismatch between reported pain levels and the degree of structural joint damage in osteoarthritis.
